Jeanne-Aimee De Marrais, team leader for the
Save the Children Katrina Response Team, commissioned this
assessment and provided logistical support during the June
15-21, 2006, survey of child care centers.
The child care survey methodology was adapted from methods
developed immediately after Hurricane Katrina in the Mississippi
disaster area by Cathy Grace, Ed.D., professor and director of
the Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute (ECI),
and other ECI staff members.
Elizabeth F. Shores, M.A.P.H., of ECI coordinated the assessment
and prepared this report.
Erin Barbaro, M.A., and Michael Barbaro, M.A., of the Community
Information Resource Center (CIRC) of the Rural Policy Research
Institute, University of Missouri, performed the geocoding of
the survey results, performed all spatial analysis, and produced
the maps and most tables in this report.
Jenifer Moore, Ph.D., of ECI assisted in the initial summary of
the child care survey results and conducted the school survey.
Lynn Bell of ECI designed and produced the report, provided
graphic support for the maps, and produced the table, “Orleans
Parish, LA: Status of Licensed Child Care Centers Post-Hurricane
Katrina, by Ward and Neighborhood.”
Chad Landgraf, Dave Connett, M.A., and Kristopher Dolle, M.P.A.,
of CIRC produced the survey maps. CIRC Director Christopher
Fulcher, Ph.D., participated in planning the design of the
survey maps.
Emily Bullock of Save the Children oversaw the telephone survey
of child care centers and provided logistical support for the
telephone survey of child care centers. Todd Battiste, M.P.A.,
M.A., of United Way provided a location for the survey “base
camp” at the United Way office on Canal Street.
