Esther M. Howard, Ed. D., oversees the administrative services essential to the operation of the Early Childhood Institute (ECI) at Mississippi State University, as well as the Institute’s campus-based initiatives. Dr. Howard and the professional and support staff work to meet the needs of the 75-plus ECI employees who work with hundreds of teachers and thousands of children in the state. 

Dr. Howard began her career in 1976 in the classroom. During her tenure as an educator, she began teaching middle school, but found her calling in the kindergarten classroom.  After teaching school for 10 years, Dr. Howard joined the faculty in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction in 1986, and later served as the Department Head from 1999 to 2005.
